Company Overview / Background

The Whitby Public Library is currently seeking an experienced, dynamic, outstanding and visionary executive to provide leadership and keep pace with a fast growing and uniquely diversified population. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) must be an inspiring leader who will continue to build on the library’s strong momentum gained over 100 years of existence. As well, the new CEO will ensure Whitby Public Library’s services meet the needs of a fast growing community. The new CEO will provide leadership to the Whitby Library system through planning, organizing and directing the operations in all areas of the delivery of public library services within the Town of Whitby and for exercising effective stewardship of the library’s financial affairs and all of its resources.

The Whitby Public Library (WPL) serves the town of Whitby, Ontario, Canada with three locations. The library is governed by a nine-person Library Board appointed by the town and operated by a staff of over 80 full and part-time employees. In 2016, there were over 1.4 million total items circulated. The current system budget is $5.7 million. In 2017, over 30,000 people attended more than 1,500 programs; and WPL acquired 6,800 new cardholders.

The new Central Library opened in 2005 and won numerous design awards, including the Ontario Library Association’s Building Award and an interior design award from the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario. The 54,000 square-foot (5,000 m2) facility is anchored by a civic square with a reflecting pool. In addition to traditional library services, the facility also offers wireless internet access, fireplace-equipped lounges and an onsite café. The Archives are also located at the Central Library and won the coveted Ontario Library Association (OLA) Archival and Preservation Award for their digitization project. In 2010, the new Brooklin branch opened and three years later was awarded the OLA New Library Building Award.

 

Position / Responsibilities

The CEO reports to the Board and has overall responsibility for managing the operations of the Library in accordance with approved policies and objectives as well as, executing the strategic plan. Direct reports include three managers: Public Services; Systems Support & Technical Services; Support Services, as well as the Support Services Assistant and Communications Coordinator.

Candidate Requirements

The Whitby Public Library requires a creative and engaging leader who is also an independent thinker with an inclusive management style as their Chief Executive Officer. He/she, as an inspiring and a visionary leader will continue to build on the library’s record of excellence and high standards. The successful candidate will possess exceptional interpersonal and trust building skills, with the ability to build and support collaborative teams, as well as foster strong relationships with the Town and other key stakeholders within the community.

You have proven to be a confident, dynamic, high energy and engaging leader and a strategic thinker with strong team building skills, who has also demonstrated success as an accomplished senior leader within the public library management system or a similar environment. Your exceptional interpersonal skills have earned you a reputation for building a trustworthy, positive, congenial work culture, as well as developing, inspiring and empowering strong management teams and staff. Having completed your postgraduate degree in Library Science or a related discipline, you also have a minimum of 10 years of increasingly responsible management experience including a library or organization with satellite locations.
