Organization Overview / Background

Flemingdon Health Centre (FHC) is a multi-service community health centre providing a wide range of health-related services based on the social determinants of health and community engagement models. FHC is a champion for people and communities who experience systemic barriers that impact their health outcomes. FHC provides services from three locations, Flemingdon site, Fairview site and Health Access Thorncliffe Park (HATP) – an innovative partnership with The Neighbourhood Organization (TNO) providing health, social and settlement services in Thorncliffe Park. FHC is built on a family medicine model which focuses on the factors that affect the community’s health. Programs and services emphasize family medicine, community involvement, health promotion and disease prevention. FHC works in close partnership with other agencies and organizations to ensure efficient service delivery and to address identified issues, such as poverty, employment, food security, isolation and newcomer support.

FHC has an annual budget of more than $10M and is primarily funded through the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network. FHC has a complement of over 100 dedicated staff as well as many volunteers and active community participants. When the health centre opened its doors in 1972 it was a satellite clinic of Sunnybrook Hospital and was incorporated as a health centre in 1975. FHC has had a long-standing tradition as a teaching centre affiliated with the University of Toronto through the Department of Family and Community Medicine as well as receiving students in various disciplines from other universities and community colleges. FHC serves more than 9,000 people every year through an increasingly broad range of medical and dental services, children and youth programs, family programs and community support services.

Position / Responsibilities

The current Executive Director is retiring after seven years in the role, and the Board is now looking for an outstanding Chief Executive Officer with a passion for inclusive and equitable health care and an ability to inspire it in others. As an accomplished organizational leader and a system thinker, the CEO will engage individuals and communities to improve health and wellbeing and work collaboratively with funders and community partners to promote health equity and improved access for the communities served. The CEO will report to a Board of Directors, lead a strong leadership team and inspire and motivate a dedicated team of managers and staff committed to providing excellent client-centred care. The CEO will be an inspirational and visionary leader committed to service excellence, health equity and social justice and a champion for healthy communities.

Candidate Requirements

The Chief Executive Officer will have at least seven years of proven experience in a leadership capacity in the community-based not for profit sector and will hold a graduate degree, ideally at the master’s level, in health administration, health sciences, business administration psychology, political sciences or another relevant field. As a motivational and inclusive leader with excellent interpersonal skills and a proven track record of leading change and transformation, the Chief Executive Officer will promote a culture of collaboration, excellence and continuous improvement and demonstrate an understanding of working in a culturally diverse and changing community environment.
