The St. Catharines Public Library (SCPL) is committed to providing all citizens of St. Catharines with the highest level of library services, materials and facilities within the resources available to meet their informational, educational and recreational needs. To accomplish this mission, four service locations are actively engaged in delivering public library services to the citizens of St. Catharines.

The City of St. Catharines has a population of approximately 133,000. The Library has an operating budget of $6,191,260 and a staff of 41 full-time and 59 part-time employees.

St. Catharines is the largest city in Canada’s Niagara Region, and the sixth largest urban area in Ontario. St. Catharines carries the official nickname ‘The Garden City’ and is located between the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Hamilton Area and the Fort Erie/Buffalo Border. With a population of approximately 133,000 residents, the city is strategically located in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula and offers excellent access to the major markets in both Canada and the United States.

St. Catharines lies on one of the main communications backbones between Canada and the United States, and as a result, numerous call centers operate in the City. St. Catharines is a city that unites its vibrant future with its rich past, boasting over 1,000 acres of parkland and trails, including the scenic Welland Canal, encouraging residents to develop a healthy and active lifestyle. The City’s quality of life is enhanced by year-round events, cultural attractions, and a wealth of sporting opportunities for people of all ages.

 

Position / Responsibilities

The CEO reports to the Board and has overall responsibility for managing the operations of the Library, in accordance with approved policies and objectives, and for executing the strategic plan. Direct reports include 7 Managers: Business and Facilities Administrator; Manager, Adult Information Services; Manager, Branch Services; Manager, Children’s and Community Services; Manager, Circulation Services; Manager, Information Technology; Manager, Technical Services and ILS; as well as the Executive Assistant to the CEO and Library Promotions Assistant.

Candidate Requirements

The St. Catharines Public Library requires a creative, visionary, collaborative leader and independent thinker with an inclusive management style as its Chief Executive Officer. The successful candidate will possess exceptional interpersonal and trust- building skills, with an ability to build and support collaborative teams, as well as foster strong relationships with the City, Provincial Ministries, cultural institutions, local businesses, social service agencies and other stakeholders within the community.

You are a proven, dynamic, high energy and engaging leader and a strategic thinker, with strong team building skills. You are an accomplished senior leader who has demonstrated success within the public library sector or a similar environment.

Your exceptional interpersonal skills have earned you a reputation for building a trustworthy, positive, congenial work culture, as well as developing, inspiring and empowering strong management teams and staff.

You have completed a post graduate degree in Library Science or related discipline. You also have a minimum of 10 years of increasingly responsible management experience within a library/ organization that has multiple locations. Experience working in a unionized environment and knowledge of Collective Agreements are required.
